Visualizing Decibels Through Brush Strokes

This interactive installation translates sound intensity (decibels) into calligraphic expressions. A mechanical arm holding a brush responds to varying sound levels, adjusting the pressure and thickness of the strokes on paper. As participants speak or make sounds, the machine captures the nuances of volume and transforms them into a unique visual language inspired by traditional Chinese calligraphy.

This project was developed using Arduino for hardware control and a custom-built mechanism to replicate the subtle movements of a calligrapher’s hand. It explores the poetic relationship between auditory input and visual form.
