
"Acoustic Marathon" is a design proposal created with Harin Kim for our Human Factors - Sonic Design course. We mapped the runner’s 42km journey against an emotional curve—from Adrenaline to Doubt, Acceptance, and Fortitude, and designed five architectural interventions to manipulate sound, acting as psychological support stations to help runners push through their physical limits.
1. Herd A hollow wooden boardwalk that amplifies the rhythmic thud of footsteps, unifying runners into a synchronized "herd" to build early momentum.
2. Self-Cheering Vaulted tunnels designed to reflect breathing and vocalizations, creating an acoustic feedback loop for runners to encourage one another as fatigue sets in.
3. Silent Core At the peak of physical doubt, this sound-absorbing tunnel cuts external noise to near zero, offering a moment of sensory deprivation for a mental reset.
4. Cheer Boost Angled acoustic reflectors capture noise from small groups of spectators and project the cheering directly onto the track to boost motivation.
5. Finish Amplified A massive grandstand canopy at the finish line acts as an acoustic shell, maximizing the roar of the crowd to celebrate the final moments of the race.
My ContributionI co-developed the acoustic concepts and strategy. Specifically, I was responsible for 3D modeling the "Herd" boardwalk and the "Silent Core" tunnel, and I produced all the final renderings to visualize the atmospheric qualities of the project.
“Acoustic Marathon” 是我和 Harin Kim 在声学设计课上的合作项目。我们将 42 公里的马拉松赛程对应到跑者的情绪曲线上——从起跑时的兴奋 (Adrenaline),到中途的自我怀疑 (Doubt),再到接纳 (Acceptance) 和最后的坚韧 (Fortitude)。据此,我们在沿途设计了五个建筑装置来改变声音环境,它们就像是“心理补给站”,帮助跑者突破生理极限。
1. Herd (群体共振) 这是一个中空的木质栈道,它能放大脚步的律动声,让跑者在整齐划一的“群体”节奏中建立起跑的势能。
2. Self-Cheering (自我回响) 一系列拱形隧道,专门设计用来反射跑者的呼吸声和呐喊声,利用回声效应让疲劳的跑者们听到彼此的声音,互相打气。
3. Silent Core (静谧核心) 在跑者最累、最想放弃的阶段,这个极度吸音的隧道能将外界噪音降至近乎零,提供瞬间的“感官剥离”体验,帮助大脑重启专注。
4. Cheer Boost (声援增强) 利用带角度的声学反射板,捕捉路边小群观众的欢呼声,并将其定向投射到赛道上,为跑者注入动力。
5. Finish Amplified (终点轰鸣) 终点线的巨大看台顶棚就像一个扩音罩,最大化全场观众的欢呼声浪,庆祝最后的冲刺时刻。
我的贡献我参与了整体声学概念和策略的制定。在具体执行上,我主要负责了 “Herd”(木栈道) 和 “Silent Core”(静音隧道) 的 3D建模,并制作了所有的最终渲染图来呈现这些空间的独特氛围。
